The Loran scholarship, valued at $100,000, is Canada’s most comprehensive four-year undergraduate scholarship. The scholarship recognizes high school students who demonstrate superior leadership, character, and service throughout their young adult lives.
The Loran Scholarship undergoes a rigorous review process to select the candidate that best deserves the award. Statistics show that in the 2019-2020 application cycle, 5,914 applications applied for a Loran Scholarship, 500+ students were interviewed in 24 regions, and only 36 scholars were selected to receive the Loran Scholarship.1 Don’t let this scare you! Just remember to put your best foot forward and be authentic in your application!
Now, you may be asking, “how does the selection committee select a Loran Scholar?” The simple answer is that they look for people who have true potential and passion for leadership. They look for people who are dedicated to making a difference in the world and people who demonstrate qualities of integrity, courage, compassion and determination - all of which cannot be seen from a students’ transcript.
Students can either apply as a sponsored candidate or a direct pool applicant. Sponsored students must be nominated by their school and students should seek to apply as a sponsored candidate if feasible. Both sponsored and unsponsored applicants must then select one reference: a high school teacher, volunteer supervisor, employer etc. Make sure you let your references know well in advance when you need your reference by! Students will then be shortlisted if they are selected for an online interview. If they succeed past the online interview stage, they will be invited for a national interview, from which the selection committee will select the final Loran Scholarship Recipients.
Overall, make sure you be yourself and be genuine and true to yourself! Good luck with your applications!
