Learning About Financial Aid for Incoming Undergraduate Students

Paying for post-secondary education can be expensive, but there are plenty of financial aids that can help.

OSAP

The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a financial aid program, set up by the government of Canada, that helps pay for college or university through grants and student loans. It is the most common form of funding for Ontario students. The funding can be used to pay for tuition, books, equipment, living expenses, and more. To be eligible, you must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a protected person. The amount of money you can receive is dependent on your educational expenses, course load, program hours as well as your personal financial situation. After filling out an application, OSAP will provide you with an estimated grant or loan amount. This will later be confirmed after your application has been reviewed. Online applications are currently open. To learn more, head to:

Scholarships

Aside from OSAP, there are a multitude of scholarships. Some are never even claimed! There are many scholarship databases to choose from, but we have compiled a list of some of them in our Scholarship Database Websites article. The great thing about scholarships is that, unlike loans, the money doesn’t have to be paid back. Some scholarships ask for an essay, a project, proof of volunteer hours, or even a simple questionnaire. Using these databases, you can find quick and easy scholarships available to you.

ISC

The Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) provides financial assistance to First-Nations students who are enrolled in eligible post-secondary programs and maintain a satisfactory academic standing. Just like OSAP, eligible costs covered by the program include tuition, books, travel support, and living allowances. To apply you must contact your local band office or the ISC regional office.
