Interdisciplinary learning is a planned approach to learn information by making connections across different concepts and ideas in various ways. When combining two or more subjects, a person can apply a broader use of their knowledge across these specialties when working on different projects. This allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental concepts learned in class by combining one’s knowledge from different subjects. In this process, the information is retained at a greater rate since students are able to further engage with the educational content they are being taught. This is especially relevant for those in the field of engineering, as it requires a deep understanding of the sciences in combination with math.
Ways Interdisciplinary Learning Benefits Students
1) Deters bias
Students who are taught through interdisciplinary learning are keener to detect bias and able to move past their ideas formed through preconceived notions. By learning concepts from multiple perspectives in a multitude of disciplines, it challenges any assumption they have made. As a result, students are able to take in new information more efficiently.
2) Further enhances the ability to think critically
When students are consistently using the content they have acquired from other subjects to learn new concepts, their critical thinking skills become more effective. By applying other skills and knowledge acquired through learning experiences, the boundaries between the different subjects are blurred and students are able to transfer knowledge throughout their learning to better understand unfamiliar concepts.
3) Enhances collaboration skills with others who have different perspectives
Being to use multiple perspectives when analyzing problems or completing tasks can also be beneficial when working in groups or collaborative environments. In these cases, interdisciplinary learning allows students to understand the concept of contrasting points of view, which conditions them to become more self-aware.
4) Allows students to understand ethical dilemmas
Interdisciplinary studies help integrate the content in subjects such as philosophy and anthropology in order for students to further understand the ethical implications that accompany all social issues. As they transfer into the workforce, it allows them to understand that all actions have consequences and predict how that may affect the future.

Through interdisciplinary learning, students are able to gain a deeper and more profound understanding of the concepts they learn, view different perspectives, and create mental links across subjects.
