How to Start Looking for Co-Op Opportunities

Written by Ahmed Ahmed

Stay Active and Prepare

Applying to co-op positions requires you to not only submit an application form of your skills, but to also prove these skills through volunteering and participation in clubs and projects. Therefore, before beginning to look for co-op positions, you should start looking for opportunities to help you build credibility for your skills.

Reflect

Reflecting on past activities and experiences is key to your co-op applications as this allows you to identify your qualifications and areas for improvement. Also, identifying the experiences you enjoyed the most will allow you to know what co-op positions will fit you best.

Write Down

Make sure you write down any activity or project you partake in as this will help you recall what you did and what you learned from that experience when drafting a resume. Your resume should be tailored towards the co-op position you are applying to. Writing down past experiences will enable all the skills you possess that are in line with that job to be recalled a lot easier and for the overall process to be more efficient.

Network

Networking will help you find a lot of opportunities and can even allow you to land these opportunities a lot easier. You can find a great network within your school or even family and friends. This network can help you obtain information about certain co-op positions and the expectations of each one. Sometimes networks can even provide references which can be very helpful in the application process.

Apply Through Your School’s Portal

Many schools have already built strong connections with companies and opportunities with these organizations can be found in your school’s employment portal. This can provide a much easier process as these positions can be very easily accessed and the application can be completed through this portal.

Apply Through External Resources

Finally, looking for co-op opportunities can be done through external websites such as Indeed or LinkedIn. These can be a little less tailored to your personal expectations and preferences, but can nonetheless provide great opportunities that may not be available through connections or your school’s employment portal.
