Whether you have gone through the application process or are currently applying for universities, scholarships are an essential part of the experience. However, the process of applying for scholarships such as the Loran and Schulich scholarships can be quite stressful and tedious. Fortunately, unlike these types of scholarships, entrance scholarships include a relatively painless and straightforward application process.
Entrance Scholarships are given by universities in conjunction with your entry into the university. They normally are dependent on academic excellence, leadership qualities, extracurricular involvement, etc. Entrance scholarships are decided by the university. For many universities such as Carleton, Queens, and McMaster, there is no separate application for entrance scholarships. You simply apply to the university and have the chance to receive a scholarship. Other entrance scholarships which are worth more typically tend to require an application, such as Ryerson’s President’s entrance scholarship.
For entrance scholarships which require an application, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure to do as much research as possible on various scholarships. This should be a given, as more research correlates with the best chance of finding the right scholarship. Next, once you have found the scholarship(s) you have decided to apply to, make sure to begin the application process early. Although this is most likely not possible right now, by beginning and submitting your application early, not only will you be able to spread the workload of the application out, but it could also increase the chances of receiving a scholarship. Many college admissions officers look highly upon students who submit their applications early, thus an early submission could give you an edge. Next, when drafting potential essays and extracurricular descriptions, make sure they are edited by as many people as possible. Getting work proofread by external sources is an excellent way to perfect any piece.
Hopefully the insight provided has helped provide clarity on the process of applying for entrance scholarships.
