Studying is essential to excelling in academic courses. Although studying solo may be the preferred method for some students, there are some significant benefits that come with learning in groups.

Here are 5 benefits to studying within a group.
1) Motivation and Focus
Studying alone may be difficult for some because of the various distractions that may be present. For example, when studying solo, one might feel tempted to scroll through their phone or get caught up fulfilling other tasks. Studying within a group places the student in an environment that motivates them to stay on task. The “peer pressure” that compels a student to stay on task within a study group is greater than the temptation to shift one’s focus. Hence, the ability to stay focused and motivated allows one to finish work in a timely manner while enjoying the process.
2) Increases Understanding of Material
Having fellow companions whilst studying allows one to further comprehend the content they are learning. When someone asks a question to another person within the group, the interaction offers a mutual benefit. The person asking the question gains knowledge that they previously did not know, while the person answering the question further grasps the content they just learned as they recite it (or, on the flip side, gets the opportunity to acknowledge any gaps that exist in their own understanding of the content).
3) Networking
Starting a study group can also bring about new connections with different people. A simple task such as studying is an easy way to bring people together to achieve a similar goal. Creating new relationships with people who are in the same class can be beneficial in the long run - they can develop into lifelong friendships or simply remain casual. Whatever the outcome may be, meeting and familiarizing oneself with new people could prove to be very useful when looking for opportunities and jobs.
4) Time-Efficient
Often, a student does not always have access to their teacher/professor and may need quick answers, especially when the internet provides no value. Having a study group allows one to spend less time trying to find someone who can answer their question as it increases the likelihood of interacting with someone who understands the concept in their immediate circle and more time actually studying.
5) Learn a New Study Method
Every single person has their own method of studying. Some people prefer to study from typed notes, some prefer to make cue cards, while others favour making visual graphics. Working within a study group can show one the plethora of ways they can learn and perhaps find one that suits them better. Finding the perfect study method is crucial to learning efficiently. Thus, being exposed to them within a study group can provide a student with the opportunity to explore and figure out what best works for them.
Conclusion
To conclude, although studying alone may have its advantages, studying in groups is also highly beneficial. It helps keep one focused and motivated, helps increase understanding of the material, broadens one’s network, is time-efficient and introduces one to new study methods. Overall, studying within a group, especially your friends, can make the process a lot easier and more enjoyable.
